SSI Weavers & Spinners Guild
Equipment Policy
Dated: April 2023
The Guild owns floor looms, table looms, inkle looms, spinning wheels, and fibre preparation tools along with small pieces used in association with the weaving, spinning and fibre processing equipment.
The Guild uses these assets for Guild projects: program activities, workshops, study groups, public demonstrations, fundraising weaving projects, and educational outreach. Guild use has priority over individual use of equipment. A Guild project is one authorized and developed by the Guild, using Guild equipment and Guild materials.
The Equipment Manager is responsible for maintenance of the Guild’s equipment pool, including routine maintenance and repair, recommendations for acquisition and disposal of items, and annual inventory update. Recommendations to purchase or sell equipment will be presented by the Equipment Manager to the Guild at a business meeting where members have an opportunity for input to the final decision.
Ordinarily all Guild equipment is to be used in the Guild’s SIMS studio space. Looms may be reserved by individual members for personal use providing that use does not conflict with a Guild project. The maximum reservation period is 4 weeks at no cost. Queries regarding availability and booking of reservations can be made by contacting the Equipment Manager.
In certain circumstances and with the exception of floor looms, a member may be permitted to rent and thereby have exclusive use of a major piece of Guild equipment in his/her home. A deposit of $100.00 is required for each item rented. The maximum rental period is 4 weeks at $5.00 per week. Itemization of all such equipment must be recorded on the Equipment Rental Form, signed by the renter and approved by the Equipment Manager.
The Equipment Manager shall examine all equipment when it is returned. If the item, including all accessories, is returned in the condition in which it was loaned out the deposit will be returned less any outstanding rent due. The cost of repairs or replacement of any equipment lost or broken during the rental is the responsibility of the renter.
If the Guild accepts donations of equipment on behalf of its members, it is with the understanding that it is the prerogative of the Guild to either keep or sell the donation.
