3rd Annual Sheep to Shawl Demonstration
Salt Spring Weavers and Spinners Guild third Annual Sheep to Shawl Demonstration is on this Fall Fair – Sept 12-13th! Come and see how a shawl is woven from raw fleece off the sheep shorn that day, to washed fluffy fibre, to spun yarn and finally woven fabric! All the steps are visible at the Sheep to Shawl tent by the Annex on Saturday and Sunday. The volunteers from the SSWSG produce a fabulous handspun, hand dyed shawl to sell at our October Guild Sale as a fundraiser for the Fall Fair. The wool is grown on Salt Spring Island from a heritage breed called Cotswold. Shearer Pieter from Saanich comes to shear the sheep twice a year, producing soft, lustrous and strong local fibre to make clothing from. This sustainable, local product is hardwearing, insulative, fire-resistant and organic.
The Sheep-to-Shawl is a Fall Fair tradition and can demonstrate all the skills needed to make your own fabric. We welcome new members and anyone wanting to volunteer during this two-day demonstration. Contact Heather or Rachel.
